VRA Awards
VRA Honorary Life Members Award Special Honorary Life memberships are awarded to Individuals, designated representatives of an Institution, Contributing or Patron members by the Executive Board in recognition of eminent distinction in any of the fields of the Association’s purpose. Honorary Life members are not required to pay dues and they have all the privileges of Individual members. Eleanor Collins (deceased) VRA Distinguished Service Award Each year the Visual Resources Association honors an individual who has made an outstanding career contribution to the field of visual resources and image management. Nominees must have achieved a level of distinction in the field either through leadership, research, or service to the profession. Someone could also be considered who has shown outstanding innovation, participation, or project management. A nomination dossier, consisting of a cover letter from the nominator describing how the nominee meets the criteria, the candidate's curriculum vitae, and supporting letters and documentation, will constitute an appropriate nomination. Electronic nominations via e-mail or fax will be accepted only if all supporting documentation is submitted in that format. Members of the VRA Awards Committee, upon reviewing submitted dossiers, may recommend one recipient of the Award in any given cycle; recommendations are subject to approval by the VRA Executive Board. Although nominations are initiated by Visual Resources Association members, the nominees need not be members of the organization. Nominations should not include current members of the VRA Awards Committee. Distinquished Service Award Recipients VRA Nancy DeLaurier Award The Nancy DeLaurier Award, named for one of the pioneers of the visual resources profession, annually honors a visual resources professional for distinguished achievement in the field. "Achievement" is measured by immediate impact, and may take the form of published work, oral presentation, project management, software development, technology application, website creation, or other outstanding effort. Originally (1997) conceived as a Writing Award, to be presented in recognition of a published paper, the Nancy DeLaurier Award now recognizes other forms of achievement in the field. A nomination dossier should consist of a cover letter from the nominator describing the nature of the achievement, the candidate's curriculum vitae, and supporting letters and documentation. Electronic nominations via e-mail or fax are accepted only if all supporting documentation is submitted in that format. Members of the VRA Awards Committee, upon reviewing submitted dossiers, may recommend up to two recipients of the Award in any given cycle; recommendations are subject to approval by the VRA Executive Board. Although nominations are initiated by Visual Resources Association members, the nominees need not be members of the organization. Nominations should not include current members of the VRA Awards Committee. |

The Visual Resources Association offers several awards to assist member participation in the VRA Annual Conference, other conferences, workshops, and other professional development. One or more Luraine Tansey Educational Fund Awards are offered each year and Corporate Travel Awards are offered dependant on funding from corporate sponsors. Selection of recipients is determined by the Travel Awards Committee. The goal of the Travel Awards Program is to encourage and support conference attendance by both new members/conference attendees and veteran members/attendees. The Tansey Travel Award program was started in 1993 with initial funding by Luraine Tansey. She had won the Distinguished Service Award that year and requested that her travel expenses reimbursement be used to assist other VRA members with their professional development. This became the seed of the fund, further supplemented when she sent in her first retirement checks (one from teaching art history, and another much smaller one from slide librarianship). The total was matched by the VRA and the Tansey Travel Award Fund was born. The Travel Award Committee, formed in 1993, presented the first five awards of $400 each to VRA attendees of the 1994 New York City conference. The Tansey awards are now funded through the proceeds of the Tansey fundraising event and the VRAffle, both held at each annual conference, donations to the fund, and other VRA funds. The Tansey awards are currently $750 each; in addition there are Top-Up awards of $250 to $500 intended for applicants who have partial institutional funding. There are several corporate sponsors who have funded awards in the past (2007 sponsors were Archivision, Davis Art Images, Gallery Systems, and Saskia, Ltd.). The Travel Awards Committee is very grateful to all of these sponsors. In 2007 the Kathe Hicks Albrecht award was inaugurated – this award is intended to support a new member/conference attendee. The Travel Awards Committee especially encourages applications from new members/first time conference attendees, veteran members who have not had funds to attend conferences, international members, and any member actively participating in the conference who lacks sufficient funding to attend. Since the founding and underwriting of the VRA Travel Awards Program by Luraine Tansey in 1993, the Travel Awards Committee has awarded a total of 88 Luraine Tansey Travel Awards, 4 Luraine Tansey Top-Up Awards, 1 Kathe Hicks Albrecht Travel Award, and 17 corporate sponsored awards.
